THE YORK SHAKESPEARE COMPANY production of
Eugene O’Neill’s
LONG DAY’S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT
Directed by Seth Duerr.
Working in the classical Actor-Manager system, Seth Duerr directs and performs in Eugene O’Neill’s Pulitzer Prize-winning autobiographical drama about a family addicted to drugs, alcohol, and hurting one another. The action covers a fateful day in their lives at their New England summer home in 1912. Drunken confessions and scathing humor in an escalating cycle of addiction and dysfunction, groping in the darkness to find their way back home.
Note: Eugene O'Neill is one of our greatest modern playwrights, and Long Day's Journey Into Night one of his most important plays. To be frank, I've seen this play a couple of times and read it also, and I really don't know what the fuss is about. I find it just kind of murky. Not the kind of people I worry too much about, either. Lots of words. Judge for yourself!
