SEVENTEEN EVERGREEN

Seventeen Evergreen
is a band that seems to get around. They play Fat City, 314 11th St, San Francisco! Friday February 29.

(Note: This group is promoting itself so hard, I thought it might be worth mentioning even though music is not theater and SF is WAY OOB.)

2007 brought them to UK and Paris for live and radio appearances on BBC Radio One, 6 Music, and XFM.

The Daily Telegraph voted their debut album, "Life Embarrasses me on Planet Earth" one of the 10 best for 2007! More recent accolades from Uncut Magazine, Pitchfork, etc.

While they are busy crafting the follow up record to be released this year, they thought they'd take a break and kick out the jams with their friends Hot Tub. This from the promoters: "They deliver a heady mix of rock and electronics that is reminiscent of Air, Pink Floyd and Boards of Canada."

Support from Oakland hip hop/electro trio Hottub, plus DJ's until 4AM including DJ Sets from Seventeen Evergreen and Hottub members andSammy D (Dirty Bird, Buzzin' Fly), DJ Deevice (High on Hope), Solar (Bang the Box, Bionic), Ryan P (Gun Club) and Adnan (Forward).

$15 tickets available at door.

Who are Seventeen Evergreen?

"With Life Embarrasses Me On Planet Earth," Seventeen Evergreen bring an intriguing new slant to Eno's notion of "nostalgia for the future" "The album's other-worldliness recalls Midlake's Trials of Van Occupanther, only with the time-machine set for the future rather than the past." - 4/5 stars The Independent UK

"Seventeen Evergreen bridge Pavement and AIR via Flaming Lips and Grandaddy to Sculpt pulsating sonic organisims that touchdown on genius. Abject brilliance." -Total Spec UK
"Lunar One, the pastoral title track of their forthcoming EP, could be Radiohead's "High And Dry" for the new millennium." -4/5 stars The Independent UK

"It's great. I particularly draw your attention to the genius of opener Music is the wine, worthy of Lee Hazlewood and Leonard Cohen. The rest is dreamy, quirky, croaky-voices, mildly smacked-out arty slacker rock somewhere between Grandaddy and Pavement." -Sunday Telegraph UK

THE FARNSWORTH INVENTION

The play is fantastic!

Brilliantly acted, written and directed!

Interesting, stimulating and fun!

THE FARNSWORTH INVENTION centers around the bitter conflict that pitted Philo T. Farnsworth (Jimmi Simpson), a boy genius who invented television as a high school student in 1927, against David Sarnoff (Hank Azaria), the head of the Radio Corporation of America (RCA). The legal battle between Farnsworth and RCA would later become known as one of the great, tragic examples of legal and industrial force combining to crush a rightful patent owner.

The play was written by the great Aaron Sorkin, (Charlie Wilson's War, Studio 60, The West Wing), and is brilliantly played by Simpson and Azaria.

Des McAnuff, who is known for his direction of such important works as "A Walk In The Woods," did a flawless job of directing.

The story is spun mostly in a series of anecdotes, some told by Sarnoff, some by Farnsworth, played out by an exceptional cast including Kyle Fabel, Nadia Bowers, Maurice Godin, Christian McCarthy Johansen, Aaron Krohn, Kate MacCluggage, Bruce McKenzie, Malcolm Morano, Spencer Moses, Michael Mulheren, Jim Ortlieb, Michael Pemberton, Javier Picayo, Katharine Powell, Steve Rosen, Brian Russell, James Sutorius, Margot White, Alexandra Wilson, William Youmans -- who take a wide range of characters.

Sorkin is perhaps the most skillful writer today at integrating powerful and important issues into popular and entertaining drama. The play takes dead aim on questions critical for the survival of an entrepreneurial economy like ours -- notions like invention, bragging rights, financial rights, strategy, pride, ego, business decisions, secrecy, espionage, theft, intellectual property, and success.

This is one of the most interesting, stimulating, exciting, different, and enjoyable shows on Broadway.

SHAKESPEARE LAB AT THE PUBLIC

The highly acclaimed SHAKESPEARE LAB actor training program (at New York's Public Theater), is now accepting applications for its 12-week acting intensive on June 2-August 25, 2008.

Scholarships are available to cover the cost of tuition.

At the Tribeca Film Festival, I had a chance to talk with Amir Arison (a young, rising star in theater, film and TV) who has taken the LAB, and he found it extremely valuable!

Now entering its fourteenth year, The Public Theater Shakespeare Lab presents a unique opportunity for actors to develop their classical skills. Founded by former artistic producer of The Public Theater, Rosemarie Tichler, the Lab immerses the actor in Shakespeare's plays and language under the instruction of some of the most respected teachers of classical theater in New York and the world. In previous years, faculty has included Christopher Bayes, Ron Van Lieu, Michael Cumpsty, John Dias, Kate Forbes, J. Steven White, and Janet Zarish. Guest Artists have included Dana Ivey, Mark Lamos, Roger Rees, Liev Schreiber, Jordan Thaler and George C. Wolfe. Under the leadership of Director Barry Edelstein and Associate May Adrales since 2007, the Shakespeare Lab continues to evolve into one of the country's most successful training programs for Shakespearean performance.

Throughout the summer, Lab actors will enrich their understanding of Shakespeare and his plays through intensive study and performance; develop skills in clown, movement, voice and teaching, and forge significant relationships with fellow Lab members, teachers and members of The Public Theater's professional community of artists. Numerous graduates of the Shakespeare Lab have gone on to secure roles on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and in regional theaters, in addition to work in film and television. The Lab provides a unique opportunity for actors to work on their craft during The Public Theater's world-renowned Shakespeare programming at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park.
